The Shape of the Mammalian Erythrocyte and Its Respiratory Function

چکیده

In a note on the shape of the mammalian red cell, Hartridge (1) has suggested that the erythrocyte has a form which is a compromise between that of a sphere and that of an infinitely thin disc. Gas diffusing from the surface of either of these figures would reach the central regions at the same time. The sphere, however, offers a small surface compared to its volume, while in the thin disc, the surface layers forming the envelope would be greatly increased at the expense of the contents. In the disc, moreover, gas would gain access too readily at the ends, so that the peripheral regions would be reached soonest. A body of the shape of the normal red cell meets the difficulties of the problem, for not only is the surface comparatively large for the volume, but the ends are thickened, so that gas diffusing from the surface reaches the central regions in a uniform manner. The red cell being greatly concerned with gas transportation, it is obviously important to consider whether its special shape offers any special advantages. This we propose to do in this short paper, thus following up the suggestion of ttartridge. Consider two equal and isolated sinks, $1 and S=. They will set up lines of flow,

The Effects of Novel Mutations in A1 Domain of Human Coagulation Factor VIII on Its Secretion Level in Cultured Mammalian Cells

Inefficient secretion of the human coagulation factor (hFVIII) in mammalian expression systems is one ofthe main causes of the hFVIII low expression level, attributed to its interaction with a chaperone known asBiP/GRP78. In order to improve secretion efficiency of the hFVIII, based on the higher secretion level of theporcine FVIII and analysis of the hFVIII A110 region, that ...

The distribution of serotonin-immunoreactive cells in larynx, trachea and bronchi of goat (Capra aegagrus) and bovine (Bos taurus)

The respiratory tract contains numerous peptides secreted from special pulmonary epithelial cells whichare called endocrine cells. The function of neuroendocrine cells is modulated by amines. Serotonin has strong vasomotor and bronchomotor effects in the airway mucosa. The objective of this study was to determine presence and distribution of serotonin-positive endocrine cells in respiratory tra...

The Shape of the Mammalian Erythrocyte and Its Respiratory Function. Ii

In a previous paper (1) it has been pointed out that a section through the poles of a mammalian red cell of typical biconcave form approximates to one of the equipotential curves of Cayley, and that, although such a curve does not fit the shape of the cell with any exactness, the approach of the cell surface to an equipotentia] surface is interesting in view of the respiratory function of the e...

Introduction: Erythrocytes are highly specialized and the most abundant cell type in vertebrates’ blood. Their main function is the transportation of oxygen to tissues of the body via hemoglobin. Methods: The study was aimed at evaluating erythrocyte morphology in Clarias gariepinus (Cg), Bufo bufo (Bb), and Agama agama (Aa) using different stains; Also, morphometric analysis of erythrocyte w...
